We certainly enjoyed spending time with loved ones over Christmas break and hope you did as well. It was wonderful sleeping in a bit and taking extra time off to spend with family, but we were starting to feel like that meme… confused, full of cheese, and unsure of the day of the week. With this frigid weather, it can be tempting to just stay home, but don’t stay cooped up all winter and miss out on some great community events!
This weekend, the Cherokee County Arts Council has partnered to present US: A Teen History at the Peacock Performing Arts Center. It’s “a walk through American history, from Plymouth Rock to the internet, all told through the eyes of teenagers.”

“This story theatre-style show is a compilation of scenes, songs, skits and monologues about the great tapestry that is America. And, like American history, it’s funny, tragic, dramatic and strange. It’s an insight into those who never made the pages of the history books, the teens who helped shape a nation. Did you know that some of the drummer boys in the Revolutionary War were as young as 11? Or that Caroline Pickersgill was only 14 when she sewed more than a million stitches into the flag that inspired “The Star-Spangled Banner”? Or that Sacagawea was 16 with a baby when she helped Lewis and Clark (who somehow remind us of Bill and Ted) map the western territories?”
There are still tickets available and students 12th grade and younger are free. You can check out upcoming performances, including U2 Tribute and Heart Tribute concerts and plays at Peacock Performing Arts Center.
We have the perfect lunch date to lift your spirits during these gloomy winter days… Every Thursday from 11am – 3 pm, the Cherokee County Arts Council opens its classroom for the Brown Bag Lunch for artists. It’s an informal get together to work on whatever creative project you wish. You can drop in during your lunch break or stay the entire time. There is no fee, just bring your lunch and art supplies to spend a little time with other creatives.
Chess for the 6 – 16 year old crowd is back in action each week after school on Thursdays. From 3:30 – 5:00 pm at the Cherokee County Arts Council on Valley River Avenue, kids and teens can enjoy chess with a bit of instruction and light snacks. Feel free to give the Arts Council a call at 828-835-0550.
The Mill Building will open their Art Gallery mid-January 2024. Each quarter, they’ll debut the creations of local artists. The Cherokee County Arts Council will exhibit the works of beloved local artist, Ann Miller Woodford in February, so follow CCAC on facebook for details soon to come… and of course, FOLLOW THIS BLOG for more fun in the mountains, where NC begins!
