Snow Cream Dreams… with Olive Oil & Balsamic Vinegar

There’s a chill in the air and we can’t be the only family dreaming of a white Christmas. With snow in the 10-day forecast, it looks like we’ll have to wait until after the new year, but we’re cautiously optimistic. So let’s talk snow cream!

Or better yet, let’s go ahead and live dangerously… Let’s talk olive oil and vinegar on snow cream! It sounds crazy, but Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company in Downtown Murphy carries two different olive oil and vinegar combos that pair deliciously with vanilla ice cream. We were skeptical too until we visited their tasting room in The Mill Building and we can’t wait to try it on snow cream.

If you’re a fan of Key lime pie, you’ll absolutely love the Persian Lime Olive Oil and Toasted Coconut Balsamic Vinegar. There’s also the delicious Blood Orange Olive Oil and Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar. To be honest, there could easily be hundreds of other olive oil and vinegar combinations in Blue Ridge Olive Oil. Most are the traditional savory options, but you’ll have to stop by their tasting room on Tennessee Street in Downtown Murphy, NC and explore their many offerings.

You don’t have to commit to some giant bottles, we love that they offer smaller bottles and variety boxes as well. Bonus. They even have some TSA friendly bottles that make great gifts for loved ones near and far. So let’s bring it back to snow cream…

Some of you may have tried snow cream, others may have no clue what we’re talking about. So let us share the snow cream recipe we’ve found in two legit Southern publications, Southern Living and Our State Magazine:

1 cup milk, evaporated milk, half-and-half, or cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
8 to 12 cups pristine snow

Whisk together the milk, sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl and refrigerate while you get the snow. Bring in more snow than you think you’ll need, because it often melts more than you expect it will. Stir snow into the milk mixture until it reaches the consistency of an extra-thick milkshake.

Variation: Replace the milk and sugar with a chilled can of sweetened condensed milk.

Aside from the obvious recommendation to avoid the yellow snow, we hope you’ll stop by Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company and pick up the ingredients from the grocery store so your pantry is stocked and ready for that first snow!
